is the 744gle the one with a b230f or b234f? (8 valve versus 16valve?) the 16 valve has more power in it.

highest i've taken my 740 NA b230f is to roughly 105MPH. as soon as i hit that, i backed off and coasted till i slowed down. not sure if that was the top speed or not.

also, top speed could be capped by a speed governor, not sure if our volvos have that or not. reason they put them on cars nowadays is because the crappiest tires available now are speed rated at S, which is 112MPH, so most cars are capped around 110MPH.
