Flame trap 200

I thought I would get familiar with removing and cleaning the flame trap, brass nipple etc. today on my 1985 DL. When I finally figured out where the trap was (between the 2nd and 3rd cylinder on the drivers side of the engine) and removed it, I noticed it was a black plastic piece that fit into another plastic piece and had 2 inlets for hoses; one for the smaller hose that attaches to the brass nipple and another larger hose. I did not find a plastic piece with many tiny holes as a mechanic showed me when he replaced it on my 1992 DL.

Did a mechanic put in the wrong flame trap or has the design changed over the years? Can any damage be done to the engine without the the tiny holes?
