48 are the rear most detents. Which relate to 1 and 2nd gear. It's not really possible to knock those out of place when stripping the box. The front three detents relate to 3 and 4th gear. The frontmost syncro cone sits on the end of the input shaft. If the mainshaft is pulled back that syncro cone moves about freely. The detents sit in 3 little cutouts in the cone. The cone moves, the detents don't sit in their cutouts, gear selection problems.
Of course Nathan still hasn't told us whether he moved the mainshaft backwards, if he didn't this is all hogwash.
