The Check Engine does indicate that it's having, or had, some kind of problem- something's out of spec in the fuel injection. Could be as simple as a vacuum leak, or as expensive as an Air Mass Meter (AMM). You can read the code yourself through the connector in the front fender- the procedure should be the same as outlined in the 700FAQ.
A Volvo dealer should read the code for free and clear it (maybe there will be a nominal service charge but it really only takes 2 minutes). If it reappears, then you'll need to address the problem. They'll be able to tell you what's causing it. If the car is running well, you've probably got weeks to work it out- maybe years! If it's havign driveability problems, you will want to get it fixed sooner. At the least, it could be getting poor mileage and making illegal levels of emissions so it's worthwhile to get it straightened out.
The Service light just needs a reset. I think it's actually behind the instrument cluster on a '91 but I guess I'll have to check on the one in the driveway! Any shop you go to for an oil change should know how to reset it too- if they don't, they don't deserve your business!
