There's a drain hole with a nut & washer on the left-rear of the differential (at least on my '93 945T). I used a bent piece of coat hanger to gauge the oil level... should be just about up to the drain hole, if the car is on a level surface.

In this shot you see evidence of a leaky pinion seal (now replaced).
