The check valves are a fairly common trouble spot and aren't expensive or difficult to replace. Usually the symptonm is that vents will quit working when accelerating, may not be your problem here.
I've seen the rubber diaphragm of the big bottom vent servo get ripped at it's shaft seal area. Then nothing gets into the airbox. Could also create such a large vacuum leak as to prevent everything else from working. Ought to make an audible hiss noise if it's torn. Hard to get at. You need to be 18 inches tall so you can work right up by the gas pedal.
