You can easily reduce the brightness of a bulb by dabbing on a drop of liquid "white out," used to correct mistyping. Even though it's white, it's also opaque and blocks light. Dab on more to dim the bulb more, chip it off to brighten the bulb.

Works like a champ.

I did this to the hi-beam indicator in my '86 -- it was annoyingly bright. Now it's just right. Three dabs did it.
