Paint Prep Question 200

Never did this myself, but a friend worked out a deal with a local body shot. He remove the bumpers, lights, trim, whatever could reasonably come off the car, then he carefully masked the rest. He let the shop do the surface prep and of course the paint. Re-installation of course was on him. This was a serious paint job, on an Alfa, and the shop guy told him that a lot of the cost was in the detail-ish stuff. He probably saved 30% on the total job. Of course this was 15 years ago; things may have changed a bit since then.
