I get flashing S E and arrow lights on occasion when starting after a cold night (perhaps -15 C or lower). The trans operates in a default mode - starts in what appears to be 2nd gear, OD does not engage at speed. Once warmed up, operation becomes normal. Code 313 is set (OBD I) After turning the key off and on (run position) 5 times, the lights stop flashing. After driving it in a situation where I had to go fwd and back many times (perhaps 50), the problem has almost completely disappeared. Once or twicwe, I aloso was unable to start the engine when in neutral - part of the same problem I assume.
So: the problem is an aging PNP switch. If you have this, try shifting from P to L and back many times. Normally one would suggest to do this with the engine stopped, but in view of my experience shifting with the engine running, I am wondering if this might be better. I had tried shifting back and forth 10 or 15 times with the engine stopped with little improvemnt shown. YOu choose. In any case, this may clean the switch contacs enough to keep you operating satisfactorily a good long time. With the 960, replacement of the PNP switch seems to be a difficult/expensive job. Much worse than a FWD Brick, so it is worth trying a workaround IMHO.
