Agree w/ Matt.

Wouldn't worry about flushing too much. If old stuff is really black or full of chips, then I'd consider changing oil again after a few months.

For older gearboxes I always use 85W-140 Chevron Delo which stays thick at high temp and gives excellent gear and bearing protection. I'm in California where it never gets too cold so sluggish shifting when cold is not much of a problem. If you're in a cold climate then you might look into a synthetic gear oil such as Redline. I'll be using Redline "shockproof medium" in a hotrod Z I'm working on.
