OD relay wired wrong? 200 1983

First - Thanks to Dave for the part nos and colors.

The difference between the relays is their internal wiring.

Standard shift cars start in OD Off default, no light on dash. Button switch on top of shifter engages OD and lights a green OD On light.

Autobox cars start in OD On default, no light on dash. Button switch on side of shifter keep OD from engaging, and lights an amber Up Arrow or OD Off light.

The contacts in the relay that control the OD are separate from those which control the dash light.

>>The indicator reads "OD OFF" when it's lit, but the OD is obviously on (and is the default when I start the car). When I push the button, the "OD OFF" light goes out, and the tranny drops into 3rd. But everything seems to be working correctly other than the light.<<

Your relay is powering a light when the OD is on because it is a stick shift relay. Your car, having an auto trans, is wired so that the dash light powered by the OD relay is the amber OD Off. The correct relay powers a dash light when the OD is off.

In a stick shift car that light would be a green OD On light. Find the correct bright orange relay in a recycling yard. Dave's numbers are correct.

Good Luck,

Bob
