What happens when a fuel pump check valve fails? I may have this problem

I do not believe the tach moves at all unless the motor almost starts [stumbles rarely, otherwise just no start]. I haven't been able to have someone else crank while i check for spark, which i need to do but as of now i am not sure.

I will check that today.
