Air conditioner compressor problem 700 1986

When air conditioner is switched on, it seems to work OK. The compressor however makes a clicking noise every 5 seconds or so. Where the belt drives the compressor, in front of that pulley looks like some form of clutch. This seems to engage for say 5 seconds, then release, then re engage. Is this a potential problem? Can I continue to use the air con or will it damage something?
