Steering and O2 700 1986

Hey all-

I'm in the process of swapping the O2 sensor and figuring out a steering knock-noise.

The O2 sensor came out like a dream, thanks to the past mechanic. It's ash white, any hints as to whether that's a good or bad sign? Car was run for only about 5 minutes before pulling the O2.

The knock- HAha. This is annoying. I get a knock turning off of straight ahead. Wheels on the ground, I hear it down towards the rack, so I bought a new lower u-joint coupling at the rack. My parts guy thought it made sense, and it wasn't cheap.

With the wheels off and the car on stands, I can turn the system by hand and hear it up in the area of the uppermost bearing of the steering column- inside the column lock assembly. The u-joint I was going to replace looks like a replacement, no tar on it like the rest of the car.

Has anyone fixed bearing problems like I might have in the steering lock assembly? All the bolts holding the dash and column together are tight.

Thanks for any input-
-Dylan
