Engine Start Up Trouble 200 1986

The fuel pressure regulator does not require cleaning. The small rubber hose that attaches is the vacuum hose and you should not find any fuel (or even the smell of it) at this hose. If by chance you get fuel out of the small (slip on type) hose, the FPR needs replaced. Don't replace it on a whim...

All the fuses in the fuse box should be clean and that would be a cost free effort and like chicken soup certainly can't hurt. While you are at it clean the 25 amp fuse enclosed in the holder under the hood. It is located on the inside edge of the fender on the driver's side. It is of the spade type, unlike the other fuses in your car.

Check for vacuum leaks as well- again no cost to check on something like this. Make sure all the hoses under the hood are attached. The large black intake hose sometimes developes holes and can effect driveability as well as idle. It is the hose you had off (or at least disconnected) when you cleaned the throttle body. Take it off and look for holes- even small ones are bad, patch or replace the hose.

Another check you can do is one on your AMM. It is at the other end of the hose I just described. Black box like device with a hose connected on each side. WITH THE IGNITION KEY OFF remove the electrical connection to the AMM. Try to start the car. If it starts and idles there is a good chance you have a bad AMM. Do not connect or disconnect the electrical connector with the ignition key in the ON position (or you will very likely have an AMM problem at that point). While you have the connector off it would be a good idea to clean the contacts (as well as any other connectors you take loose) There are products designed just for this purpose at auto supply stores (Electrical contact cleaner). After cleaning the contacts a small amount of dielectric grease (no substitute, again available at auto stores) applied to the contacts will keep the connectors resistant to oxidation.

Does the car display any black smoke from the exhaust when it does run?? This would indicate a rich mixture. Any additonal information would be helpful for people to help diagnose your car.

Eventually you will find out what the problem is. Please take the time to post back to the list what you found so that we may all gain from your experience.

Randy
