The explanation on springs getting worn came to me from tvpierce... I don't think he's an engineer, either, but it definitely fits what I have observed.

I'd love to get a list together of "good" Scan Tech parts. We've all seen the posts about exploding timing belt tensioners, doggy ball joints, rotten strut mount bushings, leaking 240 tail lights... but I know they make a few decent bits, too.
