Hello George, et al!
I just came back from an Art Fair in Dubuque. I averaged over 34 mpg in a fully loaded 1967 122 wagon. Yes, it has a single Weber, and overdrive. Still, pretty darn impressive.
I will never do another Art Fair with that kind of load. I recently bought a tiny little 1966 Belgian travel trailer, a "La Tortue". It weighs 1200# unloaded, and is about 14.5' with the tongue. I have had the hitch modified; welding in heavy duty support, and a nice big ring for the safety chains.
However, i am thinking I might need some spring helpers or load levelers with the trailer. The mudflaps were about 2" off the ground in the last trip; even with the Billsteins I literally had the car loaded all the way up to the headliner. I am not exaggerating. I still got the 34 mpg, though.
Any wise suggestions as to something i can do to help my little sweet Amazon out with towing the trailer? I will be doing quite a few trips with the 122 and the trailer; 15 or more this season, and probably every summer. I also need to get railer mirrors, and I am wondering if there are any that are worth a damn that I don't have to drill into my beloved car to install.
Next trip is coming up in early June. Any help would be appreciated. I will cut quite the sight with a 1967 Amazon and a 1966 European caravan. Be sure to hank and wave if you are in the mid-west and see me. I am the one with the two Golden Retrievers riding shotgun.
Now it would REALLY turn heads if I used the 544 as a tow car, but I think not.
