With regards to starting, if nothing's happening, I'd suspect the neutral safety switch is preventing it- there's not really anything else in hte circuit. However it could be out of adjsutment through no fault of it's own- if your rear trans mount is bad, the trans and linkage are sitting in the wrong place. Check that out along with the adjustment of the switch.
Also, it may start fine in Neutral- that would indicate the same sort of problem, it may just not be able to get fully into Park if the trans is now misaligned or something's out of adjustment. Bushings in the shift linkage can wear out as well, so if you've got a lot of play in the shifter front-to-rear, then I'd look at those as well.
