For a good bit of time, my odometer in my '87 245 was on freeze. No movement. This was, of course, before I was hip to inside information on the Internet regarding odometer gears. So in January, I purchased one, installed it myself, and for a good few months, it worked just fine.
Lately, however, it has been acting weird. The trip odometer doesn't move for a set amount of time in the following situations: once I first start it in the morning after several hours of inactivity, if I start it in the evening (after dark) after 2 or more hours of inactivity, or if I start it in the early evening after bringing it back home after the daily grind.
The odometer will switch on and work with no problems at about the same place, in the same amount of time after being started, with one exception. Every morning that I've left the car in key position II (instrument panel lamps illuminated) for 5-10 minutes before starting it and running, will have the odometer running as normal. If I leave it inactive for a while, then just start without doing this, the odometer will be on freeze.
I've taken the panel to my mechanic, we took the speedo out, stripped imperfections in the gears, but still the same thing happens.
Just what is going on here, I wonder? The gear's fine, but something else is going on here, obviously...
