There are also a control chip to process signal from the sensor and a motor to drive the odo. Overseas Speedometer Repair quoted me $100 to replace the gear, an additional $25 "if the motor or chip need to be replaced, too". I'll be doing the gear myself on my son's 88 244, crossing my fingers for now about the chip/motor.
