How can I tell if I am a tooth off on the timing WITHOUT taking it all apart again?

Thanks for the tip about the belt marks.

One other question -- I also have a '87 740 with the distributor mounted at the rear of the engine. I have read that there is no significance to the intermediate shaft timing on this configuration. This is confusing because I thought the intermediate shaft was to help counterbalance vibrations in the engine. True or not True?
