Automobile 'Black Box'

I have been told that most/many new cars now have a "Black Box" not unlike those on aircraft, but much less memory ... something like the last 10 seconds or something like that. My son, the computer Guru, is interested in finding out how to access and read these boxes in order to provide a service to legal/insurance people (far better to have them paying HIM than HIM paying THEM ;-) ). I imagine the info would be of great help to accident investigators. Anyone got any idea if this is located in the ECU or is there a separete box? How can he access it ? Anyone know if there IS a "BLACLK BOX" for sure ??
