I'm getting beat up here for my conservatism....;-)
I think the prevailing wisdom is to tighten wheel lugs to a specific torque in a specific pattern. Doing otherwise does not mean your wheels fall off, however.
I think the prevailing wisdom is to drop the driveshaft for an extended flat tow with the engine off -- I've always heard 25 miles was the rule of thumb for "extended."
But not doing this doesn't mean you'll absolutely ruin your transmission.
Do you remember the (heated) discussion several years ago about jacking an engine to replace motor mounts? 100 people could do it right but one bonehead screwed it up -- and it was our fault. I'd hate to give risky advice and have somethiong break particluarly when the conservative 'n safe approach is so easy.
