I'd suspect either a vacuum leak or an Air Mass Meter failure. The symptoms are consistent with either item.
Inspect all the intake air hoses. Any pinholes, splits or "rubber rot" - replace the hose. Dust tape will actually work for a little while till you get a chance to replace a split hose. Usually you get black smoke if you get on the boost much with such a leak- you may not have given it enough gas to cause this.
If this does indeed turn out to be the trouble, then the plugs will probably need to be changed too- they're likely to be fouled.
As for the AMM, first inspect the connector to it- it could just be loose or have a pin that's pushed back or making bad contact. I'd recommend trying to find a junkyard part first, then a new one. Rebuilds are not recommended- I've seen a lot of what I consider premature failures with them.
Good luck!
