I didn't check out what year 240 you're asking about, but here's a post with some info I gathered on a 91's speedo. 91 speedometer

Just worked on a mechanical one last night. Shaft was worn under the die-cast gear at 323K. Not a thing wrong with the nylon gear. A few whacks with a 1/8 inch cold chisel on the shaft's worn area seemed to cure --- well, I've got 50 miles on it this morning anyway.
