You may not have been listening in shop class. You can do it with a steel
rule also, a caliper is not necessary. All the valves should lift about
3/8".

I agree with the other guys, this doesn't sound like a cam lobe issue,
it sounds like a fuel pressure or ignition issue.

Insufficient point dwell angle could also give similar symptoms.
