a/c control panel or something else? 700 1992

I have a 92 940 with a toggle switch to bypass the climate control unit to run the AC (cheap fix proposed by mechanic 2 years ago when I balked at the $500 unit replacement). Recently, my 16 fuse started blowing either immediately, or within a minute or two after the AC was turned on. I thought it must be the fan switch which was already having a problem - but replacing it did not solve the AC problem. The same mechanic told me it sounded like a bad compressor and a couple of other folks have since said the same thing. I traced the wiring for the toggle switch to the compressor and then from the switch to the #4 connector underneath fuse 16. So then, I disconnected the fan and control unit wiring figuring that the only thing left on the circuit was the compressor. The way the toggle switch is wired, the compressor turns on regardless of whether the fan is on. So, having isolated the compressor on the circuit, the fuse kept blowing every time the switch was turned on. All that lengthy explanation is to say that, based upon my experience, I have concluded that the people saying the compressor is bad are probably right (and since your problem is similar, yours probably is too). And if anyone else reading this is considering a toggle switch fix to the control unit problem, I am wishing I had not done it. I have learned that in addition to the control unit, the high and low pressure switches were bypassed. Also I've been told it can be hard on the compressor if it is fully powered when the ignition is turned on and the control unit delays power in this circumstance. So, in the long run the toggle fix may have led to the failure of the compressor (although at 187K you might say it was time anyway). Now, do I pay the mechanic ($$$$$) to replace the compressor (and the R134 retrofit) or do I venture into the great "do it yourself" unknown. What will you do? Sorry for writing a book, but it was therapeutic for me and I hope it will help.
