Well I went out and put a small diameter bare welding rod into #1, slid the gear on the crank put the plastic cover in place and slid the hub pulley unit into place. I rotated the engine by hand from the position it was in and found it was way after TDC. I rotated the engine counter clockwise and slowly clockwise until I was at TDC marking the pulley to line up with 0 on the plastic. When I removed the hub pulley assembly and plastic cover I found the keyway in the crankshaft (and lower land of the gear) line up perfectly with a reinforcing rib that runs from the 11 o'clock position of the crank seal area up and around the intermediate seal area then back to the crank seal area.
I will be putting everything back together this afternoon after church. I am very grateful for helping me to solve this issue and will report back later today with the good news............Tx
