Dropping out of OD, what to do????? 200

First try changing the transmission fluid.

I had the same problem once. Mine would always go into OD when it was cold, then after I drove a way, it would drop out at a random moment and not go back in until the car cooled down completely.

A good indy Volvo shop said I would have to replace the OD or find another transmission. Hmmmmmm. Just as an experiment, I changed the fluid.

Hey--it works again!

Turns out the fluid has additives that 1. stabilize the viscosity between cold-warm operatio and 2. condition the various o-rings (there are a LOT of them) in the OD unit. These additives wear out or evaporate, and then the fluid doesn't work the way it spoze to. Usually what happens is that fluid starts bypassing critical o-rings so the OD loses pressure and the clutch disengages.

Hope that's your problem. If not, the other posters have all spelled out logical trouble-shooting items.
