did 87 and 88's get the L's ? ?? way back then ? junk yards' word can be wrong.
on the driver's side of the trans, theres a data plate from the manufacturer. might have to scrub it free of grime from underneath, but the proper model name will be there, L or not.
daddys 93 944 has an L tranny, and it has never worked right since we got it...acts rather inconsistantly, but he just lives with it...to leave well enough alone is his conservative eyes.
in my own cars, i have learned that flushing trans fluid (such as through the cooling lines) to empty the tranny AND torque converter and then filling entirely with mobil one synthetic TRANS fluid breathes magical new life into almost any tranny, speakin from experience. doing this and then feeling how it shifts can tell you a lot, or even eveyrthing you wanted to know.
with no volvo do you pay through the nose for gas. try a v 8 cadillac or a truck...lets talk nose then. ;)
good luck
