Make sure the kick down cable is lined up properly and the sheathing for the cable is properly inserted. Then check for tightness. I've found on my 940 that anything other than perfect cable alighnment and a little slackness in the cable at idle will cause late and harsh shifting. Check the cable first, then consider flushing the trans.
