240 fuel return line - how low does it go?

I am about to repair a pinhole leak in the return fuel line of my 1986 240 by replacing the leaky segment with rubber tubing. I know that when I cut the metal tubing some fuel will spill from both the upstream en downstream sections . Is there a risk that the downstream pipe will act as a siphon and empty the tank . How deep in the tank does the return fuel line go. Should I have enough gerrycans at hand to empty most of the tank or should I expect just a couple of gallons.
