As for the transmission, I just bought a 87 740Ti, AW71 "bad transmission" for $200. The transmission was about 2 quarts over the full line. As I drove through town, I definitely felt it slipping. The kickdown cable was also bound up but I don't think that would cause the slipping, just shifting too late. Anyway, I drained the extra fluid out, fixed the cable and it shifts fine now. I think "foaming" is a bad thing in a device which relies on hydraulic pressure to operate properly.
The engineers who built these cars had to decide the optimum fluid levels. I believe Volvos are well-engineered cars and unless your mechanic was previously a Volvo engineer, he has no business second guessing the guys who designed the car.
