I have a 1987 240 automatic that just failed the ridicoulous emission test that we have here in southwest ohio. The reason I have an attitude about this test is the gross inaccuracy of the test. You can go to one test station, and get one reading, then go down the road to another, and get a totally different one. Anyway, it has a high NO reading. Now, for some of the cars history. My son drives this car and has beat the living heck out of it. It is basically just driven and totally neglected, except for regular oil changes. The flame trap is in need of cleaning, the oxygen sensor is probably original. The car has aprox. 155000 miles on it. What do we need to do to pass the test? I have all of the tuneup parts for it (should have been done before the test). Should we just tune it up, clean the flametrap, put in a new oxy sensor, and run it through again? What else would cause the high readings.
