I went though much the same process as you on my 88 740 (same tranny). Eventually as a last resort I did a flush and used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. The results were immediate, OD worked perfectly and it also cured a delayed shift problem between 1st and 2nd. I put another 40K on that tranny before selling the car. It is still going strong with the new owner.
