Alternator bolt snaps -- again! 140-160 1973

The bolt on the 145 gave up again tonight. Much clangorous drama. Luckily, I was just around the corner from home and I had a couple of extras in the garage.

The bolt was only two years old, tops, and was the hardest grade. What makes these break so easily? Is this something I should buy from the dealer?
