Lambda Sond means Lambda Sensor, as in a reference to the O2 sensor feedback loop that was a big freakin' deal in those days (hence the prominent badge.) So you are correct.

As for the Volvo symbol, it goes back to the alchemists' symbol for iron, not male-ness. The Volvo name, meaning "I Roll", encapsulated within the symbol for iron, means "Rolling Strength." A fitting moniker.
