Rod Knock 700

Driving it home from the dealer today I definitely thought it was louder when I first started it up than when I got home; at the end of the (long) drive I wasn't really conscious of the knocking noise at all. So I'm hopeful that it is just piston slap. Is this a pretty Volvo specific problem, or could any mechanic I trust distinguish between rod knock and piston slap?
