Starter problems 200 1988

I hate to make it sound worse, but I had an '87 740 GLE with the same issue. It was not the starter or the starter gear. It was wear on the large ring gear on the flexplate. The wear was concentrated on one spot on the ring where the engine comes to rest after turning it off 90% of the time, therefore 90% of the starter engagements happen at that spot, creating the excess wear. This could be why the second try (where the starter is engaging in another spot) works as normal.
