Severe engine vibration 740 GL 2.0L 700 1990

Thanks for the helpful replies. I checked out the crankcase vent system and cam belt and timing marks today (thanks sumpmnu) . Once I was happy the timing was OK, I let the engine get up to temperature. The vibration reduced as temp rose, and when the needle centred the engine was completely steady. Test drive, power output was normal. On return noticed slight puffs of oily smoke from behind exhaust manifold shield. Ran out of time to investigate further today, so I think I'll get the local garage to do compression tests.
Until next weekend.
Cheers
Kev
