bench test fuel pump? 700 1984

Mike -- The main pump on my '86 740 wagon has been getting loud lately. I checked for noise from the in-tank pre-pump... (listened through the fuel filler pipe when the engine was running) and heard nothing. Today, I removed the pump and float switch assembly. The hot (red) wire to the pump was broken at the connector where power first reaches the pump itself. I removed the entire pump/float switch assembly, aired it out, repaired the wire/connector and applied 12V directly...... nothing.....! Unless the pump has an interlock of some type that only permits it to run when submerged, I'm assuming the pump is shot and will replace it this week.... I don't know the normal life of the in-tank pump but I've never replaced this one before and the car has 283,000 mi.... Final thought and caution....most of the people on this forum have forgotten more about Volvos than I know... :~)
