Hand Brake Problem 200 1988

I know that this may sound trivial, but try it an see if it works...

Have you properly secured the two cables (at the point where they cross over each other) to the mini-spring assembly on top of the rear differential? It looks like it's purpose is just to secure the cables in the correct position so they don't bounce around, but it actually seems to serve a bigger purpose. By securing the spring correctly (or replacing it if it's missing), this may take up some of the slack in the lines, but back off the cables when you secure the spring. I know that when the spring broke on my car, I suddenly had a lot of slack in the parking brake.
