Calvin,
It sounds like you are ready for a service manual. I've used them all (including Clymer), and while the Haynes** has decent 240 coverage, I much prefer the Bentley 240 Service Manual '83-'93. It costs more, but is better organized and indexed (and is about twice as thick). It lists for $49.95, but I've seen it for about $30 at www.eeuroparts (free shipping with $39 order, easy to spend another $9).
I'd suggest that you have the book of your choice at hand before you do the belt job. You can also see what's involved in the 700/900 FAQ (see the Features pull-down menu at the top of the page). The B230 pulley info is different, but the rest of the job is basically the same.
As to the B23 pulley, you can either split it, as Bob suggests, or remove it whole by removing the pulley bolt (which I just did on an '85 turbo). The bolt method requires holding the pulley against the wrench torque. The B21/23 also has a special holding tool, which I have, but it can also be done with "the rope trick" (use the Search feature under -HELP- at the top of the page). I pull the pulley because it is quicker (for me) than splitting it.
** I'll probably get flak from the non-Bentley folks, but I just looked up the T-belt procedure in the '76-'93 Haynes and got a refresher on why I like the Bentley better:
• Under step 7, Crankshaft pulley - removal and installation, Fig. 7.3 shows a B21/23 pulley being separated (the 6 nuts/bolts removed), but the caption says to remove the "large bolt".
• It then goes on about using a "puller" if necessary (never had to), and closes with a caution to "be sure the guide pin (a B230 item) is in place", referencing a B230 harmonic balancer/pulley drawing.
There's no reference to the two distinctly different pulley types and removal methods. Would you want this as a guide to your first attempt?
End of rant,
Bruce
