for all good suggestions. I did smear a bit more grease than a match head, but I can clean it off. I have a tin can of vaseline that's probably 10-15 years old that'll last the life of the car (I know, it's a Volvo, but still....)

P.S. A weird thing happened when I tried to start the engine after replacing points, condenser, rotor and cap. The engine wouldnt start and the fault turned out to be the rotor. Never heard of a bad rotor before. This one had infinite resistance between the metal at center top and the tip.
