Possible causes of non-functioning headlamp wash/wipe? 700 1990

The headlamp washers/wipers on my 745 don't work and don't appear to have done so for a long time. I have no idea where to start looking for the problem.

All the washer/wiper hardware is present, as is all of the electrikery. I have checked everything over, but try as I might I can't get the washers/wipers to work!

I find this fault to be an increasingly annoying problem which is letting down the rest of the car. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?
