I agree.... Probably the slip rings where the brushes ride is worn some, and when you first began the brushes aligned to a better fit.

If your'e wondering about charging, get a volt meter on line at the battery and seek 14,2 to 14.6 volts at idle. If you have that the system is fine..

With the engine off and the lamps on high you want to stay above 10.5 volts for quite some time, and if the battery is rather fresh in a few moments after the lamps are off you want to see 12.5 volts again... poor mans load test...
