Hi.
You're in "Alberta", as in Canada? Oh, then you very well might have the higher compression "E" engine -- and please pardon both my U.S.-centricity (assuming you were in the U.S.), as well as my president's gaff (i.e., he often says "Mexico is our longest and closest good neighbor"), as I guess he forgot about the Alamo!
Anyway, it sounds like you have a '73. I bought one of that year new, although I only kept it five years because of constant A/C breakdowns -- I guess you don't have A/C, right? Anyway, after many, many years, I became nostalgic because that car was my favorite Volvo (aside from the A/C), and so I wound up buying a '75 last summer, which I have now.
Anyway, referring to my "green" Volvo Service Manual for my old '73, you might be interested in knowing some differences between the E and F engines: horsepower (SAE), E=175 @ 5800 rpm, F=138@5500; torque (lb-ft), E=178@2500, F=154@3500; CR, E=10.0:1, F=8.7:1.
Here's something to distinguish them for you: Compression pressure, E=156 to 185 psi, and F=128 to 156 psi. If you happen to remove the head, head height, E=85.5 mm, F=87.0 mm; head gasket thickness (unloaded), E=0.8mm, F=1.2 mm.
There are NO other differences shown in the manual (tune-up specs, etc.) between the E and F engines.
For the transmissions, there is a slight difference ... while it shows the same M400 and M410 (400+o.d.) transmissions, as well as the BW35 that we both have, the torque converter stall speed shows 2300 rpm for the E, and 2200 rpm for the F (probably on account of the higher power).

But I'm at an internet website now, and I found something that might help. On your car's "product plate" (in the eng. bay, on the left fender), look at the fourth digit on the first row, "Type" .... it should follow "164" as the first three digits. If the fourth digit is a "6" (e.g., if it reads 1646...), then you have the low compression F engine. If it says "4" (or possibly "5"), then you might have an E engine (the website is incomplete here). And just to confirm reliability of this website's info, the sixth digit should be "6" (for a BW35) and the eighth digit should be "Y" for a 1973 (an "A" would be for a 1974). Does this check out?
