Even though my car's old, I occasionally take it up to 5,500rpm and
hold it there for a minute or so. This is known as an "Italian
tuneup," and helps blow carbon and other accumulated junk out of
the combustion chambers. After this procedure is done, the car
generally idles more smoothly than before. YMMV, of course.
