You may have a thermostat stuck in the open position. Feel the upper radiator hose. If it feels warm before the guage shows much heat, the thermostat could be the problem. If the hose stays coolish for awhile the quickly warms up, the thermostat should be ok and maybe your temperature guage is faulty.
A quick check of the guage is to pull off the wire to the guage and connect this wire to ground (engine). Turn on the ignition to the run position and the temp guage should read maximum. If it does, the guage is ok. Conn ect a 68 ohm resistor from that wire to ground and the guage should read3/4 on the scale. If so, the guage is ok and you may have a bad sensor.
My bet is the thermostat.
