You're on the right track. Could be either AMM or check valve.
Check the connections at the AMM to make sure they're tight and seated fully. A used AMM would be a good test. Bosch "007" model.
The check valve is cheap, if messy to replace. Maybe change the fuel filter while you've got that apart. Could be 10+ years old and quite dirty.
